After thinking about it, that torpedo area can be easily fixed. At least it's not a major part of the ship.

I figured as much.  I mean, just a simple texture alteration should be enough, I'd think.

My personal theory is that there are only about three or four launchers in the pod, and they can rotate to face multiple ejection ports so that torpedoes come out more directed towards their targets.  Imagine behind those four tubes on the front/dorsal of the pod is only one launcher and it can arc through the four tubes.

Not a bad theory actually. Perhaps even (since the Akira is an "older" design), a system meant as a testbed for what would later be used on DS9 ? (rotating torpedo turrets etc).

I always thought of it as a interchangeable pod like the Nebula which is why it has a launcher in the main body of the ship
