My other stuff (custom Desert Eagle)
« on: March 10, 2007, 05:47:53 PM »
Me and this other guy who did a total conversion for Far Cry are going to be getting together a new K9 VISION mod with all-new gun models in it that I'm making, and, well, here's one of them - it's obviously a Desert Eagle - this one in .50AE (I'll have plenty more screenshots of other models for this thread soon).  The model right now has 9515 polygons, and the insides of the weapon are fully-detailed for use in a first-person shooter game.

I look forward to seeing that thing fully textured.

Whoa...how close are you to being done with the textures on those?

Those are only solid-colored textures; I have to look at the grip on my Mark XIX and draw it with a decent alpha map and then generate a DDS with 8 or 9 mipmaps for use in Far Cry.

I also have found a very easy way to simlulate a brushed metal look by using the spray can in paint on a narrow image and then just taking that image and stretching it in CS2 to get a streaked metallic look.

LOL, no need to stretch it. Use motion blur. :P

A lovely 1024x1024 grip texture bearing the IWI logo:

1024x1024 just for the grip texture!?!?

Wow
Awesome
What size are you going to use for the rest? Or is it done (doesn't quite look it, though)

MS3D renders the matte chrome portions sort of yellowish for some reason; that picture is zoomed out too far to see but there's brushed chrome over all the parts that need it; this model will look better when rendered in Max or better yet in Far Cry with a shader and an alpha map.

More detail; these guns are nearly finished - the finishes on the guns are satin nickel, polished blued, and brushed chrome.

Here's the magazines - they're not true to real life because I'm already using too many polygons for these guns - from left to right is .357 S&W Magnum, .44 Remington Magnum, and .50 Action Express; the .357 and .44 rounds are rimmed and the rounds below the top round must be staggered so that they stack correctly - the .50AE is a normal auto cartridge that stacks just like .45 ACP or 9mm Parabellum.

Hi CR, I think the guns could use some backed shading in the maps, because so far they look a bit too plain.
Also guns usually have a straight brushed marked look, like brushed steel used in architecture, so perhaps you could add some more of it to the model.

These are just crappy MS3D screenshots - in the game they will have alpha maps as well as shaders - the alphas will take care of the brush marks and the shaders will take care of reflective type stuff; a brushed or polished weapon usually has matte portions - this is true of a Desert Eagle, so only a few portions of the weapon will be brushed or reflective.

Here's a Smith & Wesson 500 that I started yesterday.

Here's the finished 500 with only basic texturing; I also need to separate the muzzle brake from the barrel so that it doesn't look like it's integrated into the barrel (the brake is detachable).  This model, like the Desert Eagles, is built for use in a first-person shooter, since the cylinder, crane, and ejector are all detailed and moveable.

Also note the smooth-shaded screenshots of the .50AE Desert Eagle next to the correctly-scaled Smith & Wesson 500 - the 500 dwarfs the Desert Eagle, but in real life the Desert Eagle is only a couple of ounces lighter than the 500!

That's a sweet S&W Model 500 you have there, the Desert Eagle is equally nice too. :D

While I'm a horrible judge of ages and all that, but from what I've been able to judge, I would think that 'wife' might be just a little more appropriate for CR, I don't know, lol.

Anyway, I would finish off the mags for your DEP. Of course, you wouldn't release that in the Far Cry conversion, I think you should just finish it off and have everything as close to the real thing as possible. But then again, I'm a horrible judge on the abilities of a 3D program, too.
