Title: Starfleet Museum WIP - Swordfish Carrier
Post by: GMunoz on August 06, 2010, 10:45:45 PM
Planning on doing some ships from Masao Okazaki's Starfleet Museum.  Here is my first one, the Quetzlcoatl-class semidreadnought from the early 23rd Century, launched 2215:

:yay:   SWEET!!!  Was hoping you'd take a crack at a few of those!  Are you planning on doing the UESN ships as well?  Or any of the Rom and Klingon ships?

Whoa, creepy... I have some almost-finished Avenger, Paris and Torsk classes I've been toying with... Mesh looks very slick!

I just might barf...

Ugh, I never was much of a fan of these pre-TOS, pre-Ent, pre-XI fan ships.

Isn't that more of a personal opinion than constructive criticism? :P

Post by: FarShot on August 07, 2010, 10:01:40 AM
True.  It's a great model, looks clean and simple.  A Kelvin-ified version would look better in my opinion, but then it wouldn't be an SFM design.

hm, do I smell a Daedalus in there, somewhere?  i'd like to see one set up with NX or Kelvin style weapons.  i had an idea for a Kelvinized Daed at one point.

You know it's funny that you should mention a NX style Daed King.  Because the image below is my current desktop, and given Gs work on the Conestoga I think he could pull her off nicely.

Farshot Not Cool Man...G has really put a lot of work into original non-Connie TOS designs and should be given some credit for that.  True some of the pre-TOS designs weren't pretty but they still make up the, non-canon albeit, history of the franchise we all care enough about to be talking about in a forum.

Anyways, here's the picture of the Daed.

Post by: GMunoz on August 07, 2010, 12:09:53 PM
Farshot - that's ok, I'll ask the cabin cleaning crew to stock some extra barf bags on board for you just in case.

Villain - I am planning to do the Avenger, Predator and Paris-classes as well.

DMWalsh79 - That Daedalus reminds me of the Icarus-class I did, but I would like to take a crack at this one.

I thought the same thing when I saw it.  Looking forward to your take on the Daedalus.  The Paris should be interesting since that was the basis for the Archer class.  Should be interesting to see those big ole honkin' cannons under her nose.

I say keep it up, I love Masao's designs, I'd certainly like to see more of them in BC

Yea I like those nose cannons too.  Planning on doing the Lancaster also.

I'll do that Daedalus next,  two ships, how does the USS Walsh and the USS King sound?
Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP
Post by: DMWalsh79 on August 07, 2010, 12:39:13 PM
well USS Walsh does have a nice ring to it IMHO.  Haven't done enough posts to cookie you yet but I am giving this overall idea of SFM a virtual cookie at least.

Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP
Post by: FarShot on August 07, 2010, 01:58:40 PM
I just never was much of a fan of anything Daedalus or other TOS designs besides the Constitution and slight variants.  There are only two things I like that have anything to do with the Daedalus class, the Icarus and the Olympic.

Regarding the Icarus, it's absolutely beautiful.  A well executed ship to be sure.

I am a bit fond of that slightly reimagined Daedalus though.  I'm still not much of a fan of the tube neck, but you can't change everything and get away with it.
Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP
Post by: DMWalsh79 on August 07, 2010, 02:05:18 PM
I've never been a big fan of the Daedalus either.  The only reason I ever really tolerated it was because of it being on of Jefferies original designs for the E.  That being said the redesigned Daedalus definitely is much better looking.  Glad G is thinking of doing it.  Been wanting to show it to him for awhile but didn't want to seem like I was making a ship request lol.

I was toying with this ship, a Daedaloid inspired design for sure, the USS Armstrong from ship schemtics database.

She IS amazing. Truly a nightmare for Klingons and Romulans..Although, IMHO she could use some rollbar-mounted phaser cannons just to match the wide range of weaponry carried by rommies and klinks. but she is already able to run toe to toe with surprisingly many TNG vessels..

Alright folks this is way cool.

Here are Fusion Nuclear Missiles (Torpedoes).  These aren't just torpedoes with a large damage factor but use torpedo scripting.  The torpedo itself will not cause any damage but when the Nuke goes off the splash damage from the explosion will damage your target and any other nearby ship including the player ship, so these must be used wisley.

Go ahead, that looks awesome, we could always use more Pre-TOS ships.

BTW, does Masao know your doing all this?  He might have extra reference material for you to use, not that you need it, you're doing an awesome job with what you have.
Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP
Post by: GMunoz on August 12, 2010, 08:39:01 PM
Thanks Aces.  No, I have not contacted Masao but that is not a bad idea to do so.

I decided to do this ship because it's so ugly I couldn't take my eyes of it, LOL.  I guess she will be fun to shoot at, put her out of her misery with one of the fusion missiles.

I'm interested in the Dragon Class, I don't think she's ugly, she looks purposefully utilitarian to me.  Although it looks like you need to shorten the length of the pulse cannons on the command hull just a slight bit, they look shorter in the schematic.

Also, I think you should lighten the hull textures on your pre-tos ships, at the very least the SFM ones. Since the schematics show they should have a nearly white color, as opposed to the gray TOS hull.  Other than that, Your ships look excellent, I'd love to see more SFM ships in the future like the Comet, Gagarin and Wasp classes

Need your opinions on what looks better, textures with paneling (top pic) or without panrling (bottom pic) for the Museum ships, especially the SS Bonaventure which is from the Animated Series.
Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP ( Need Opinion )

the one with paneling, it gives the hull more dimension, more solid look IMHO.

Definately with panelling, but i would adjust the texture on the necelles so the reg is not on that slanty bit, mabey spread it out or summat.

Thanks DMWalsh.  Can't decide on wether to texture her in UES or UFP markings.

Depending on when the ship was constructed, why not make both? Personally i'd love to see some of these Starfleet Museum ships textured in a similar style to the NX-01.

I would tend to agree with darkthunder.  Seeing some in NX style texturing would be nice and you could always do a UESN texture and then make a "refit" version textured in UFP livery.

Here is the Siegfried-class dreadnought.  I like the concept of this ship, the front half of the secondary hull is dedicated to the Kaminari II "shield buster" super beam weapon which is fed power directly from the warp core.

I think Zambie Zan did a pack of Starfleet Museum Romulan Ships, and maybe did a TMP version of the D4, but that's about all I recall. It would be nice to see D2 to D6 done in the TOS era.

There are 2 separate ship packs of museum era ships in it's own sub category on the main site.  Seeing G's take on them though would be interesting to see.

First I'd like to say, your doing marvelous work on Masao's ships, the Siegfried looks great. However, going back through the thread I noticed that the pylons on several of the ships are not accurate to the schematics.  The Quetzalcoatl shouldn't have any grates on the the top sides of the pylons.  The Dragon shouldn't have any grates on the forward pylons.  The Valley Forge should have one continuous grate on the pylons.  And the Siegfried should also have a single continuous grate.

Aside from those details, your models are nearly perfect depictions of these ships, and I'm really looking forward to them.  I understand of course, if you don't wish to take the time to fix these admittedly minor features, but I thought I would point it out in case it was your intention to make them as accurate as possible.
Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP - Siegfried Dreadnought
Post by: GMunoz on September 21, 2010, 09:24:28 AM
Shion,  thanks for your appreciation of the Starfleet Museum models and I crongratulate you on your attenion to detail.  Indeed my intention is to reproduce these models as closley as possible to the dipicted schemetics on Masao's site.

You caught the one area that I allowed myself to deviate as I thought it made the models look a bit better by adding some detail.  I do not think that correcting these would be to big of an effort.  I would like to ask the BCC community on their opinion on wether to leave them as is, with the added grates on the pylons, or remove them so they are more accurate with the schematics?
Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP - Siegfried Dreadnought

Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP - Siegfried Dreadnought
Post by: DMWalsh79 on September 21, 2010, 10:38:20 AM
I like 'em with the grills on.  They don't take away from the original designs and add a bit of continuity to the overall design lineage.
Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP - Siegfried Dreadnought
Post by: ACES_HIGH on September 21, 2010, 12:10:12 PM
perhaps a middle ground, leave them on but make them less pronounced, give them a dark specularity so they pop out in the right light.
Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP - Siegfried Dreadnought
Post by: Shion on September 22, 2010, 06:41:12 AM
I'm certainly glad that my post wasn't taken in a negative light, or construed as being nit picky.  I must admit I felt a bit of trepidation posting that, as I've seen some backlash against criticism here recently.  So I thank you for seeing my intent.

My view on it, is that these are absolutely wonderful, accurate representations of the Masao's Museum fleet.  Thus since you are striving for accuracy and are nearly as close as any reproduction can be, I see it as a shame not to go all the way.

Though I will say that either way you decide to go, I'm definitely downloading these and I'm sure they will become favorites of mine.  Also, Thanks for modeling all of these TOS ships and making them available to us. It's an under appreciated era, and I'm glad someones filling it out with such quality and attention to detail.

addendum:  While I feel that that while extra detail can be nice at times, grates are indeed present on quite a few of the museum ships, while absent on others.  To me that implies that those traits are intentional by the author, and the grates or lack there of are a feature of the ships design.

sub addendum:  Only 2 of the ships currently made should have no grates, the latter 2 simply have a continuous grate instead of a split one, so no details are actually lost.

Gentlmen,  the tiger stripes are not "creative licensing" or "artisitc discretion" or anything along those line but are in fact part of the author's (Masao Okazaki) original design and depiction of the Siegfried-class ship.

This is an education, this thread. I'd always glossed over the goofy-looking SFM designs, and not given them much thought. Seeing them fleshed out like this is an eye-opener. There was a really nicely mapped out evolution of the Starfleet design ethic, before Enterprise and JJTrek muddied the waters (though I love the Kelvin).

I've groaned about the endless TOS connie kitbashes being churned out as "TOS this" or "TOS that", but these, for the most part, really have their own character. I've just noticed how some of those ships have bulbous and overly-rounded nacelles. I wonder if Ryan Church drew any inspiration from them? I'd like to think he and the rest of the design team at least surveyed Trek history to gain a flavour of what we expected.

Any plans to make a few Romulan, civvie, or other non-Starfleet ships from the museum?

It might be sacrilege to say it, but I do remember some of those designs being extremely simple and under-detailed, even by TOS standards (*As if in apology, turns head and gazes lovingly at DST HD TOS 1701 on nearby shelf* Simple or no, it's a gorgeous starship), is there any chance of greebling, or breaking the curves here and there, taking a little artistic licence with some of the more hideously simplistic designs? Or are you just leaving them on the cutting room floor?

I probably should release what I have done already.   Just need to do a few tweaks to the HPs.

Should I do the entire bundle or package them by era?  for Example: Pytor, Avenger, Predator in one package, Lancaster, Quetzalcoatl, Paris, Siegfried in another?

It's been a while, the Predator, Avenger and Giant look great.  I personally don't mind waiting until your done, and downloading a single pack.  I think you should take your time on it and finish all the ships you want to do and not rush it.

The Starfleet Museum Klingon ships do look a bit "cartoonish", especially the early ones but, as with the fed ships I am trying to stay true to Okazaki's designs.

I like it!  Nice pulse textures too! Cookie for you.

that pulse looks standart to me. no textures applied that are special. i dont even think you can apply textures to the pulse model. to  a torp model yes... but pulse?...

well, good work of you, but the design just doesnt get to me.
Title: Re: Starfleet Museum WIP - Klingon D4
Post by: GMunoz on October 30, 2010, 08:19:04 AM
You are correct JTK.  Pulse textures can not be changed, only color and size.

I have found of Masao's SFM designs that people either like them or they don't.   But it is kind of cool seeing these ships going up against each other in Bridge Commander, especially the Romulan War era ships, kind of a change of pace.

I am also striving to make the HPs for these ships as close to the descriptions given by Masao on the website.  Power systems and shields are not so advanced on these ships and managing power distribution and repair are necessary during combat, which I believe was one of the the original intentions of Bridge Commander.  This aspect of the game, again, is one of those things that people love or hate.

Thanks to everyone whos has given me support during this effort, hopefully I will finish soon and make the models available to all.

Have a look at some of the pulse and torpedo textures in the /date/textures/projectiles folder.  If you DL the Ent G and want to use those as a base, go right ahead.  Once you've got your .tga's set up for how you want the pulse to look, go to /scripts/custom/projectiles and create a script for the pulse.  Again, get the Ent G and just use my work as a base.  The script is "DJQuantum" and the .tga's are similarly named.  Then in the MPE, when you set up the projectiles, just specify the script name and (I think) folder and they should work.  Don't forget to associate a sound with the pulse.

DJ,
Forgive me but I don't think we mean using torpedo scripts with pulse weapons in the HP as in the Enterpise G.  When using actual pulse disruptor scipts, which gives you an elongated tear drop shape projectile, the texture can not be specified in the script.  Technically the texture can be changed by modifying the default disruptor.tga  image file but  Since this file is shared by all the disruptor scripts the change will effect all ships that use disruptor scripts.

i better make a Pre-TOS catagory in my saves, after all...

Indeed. Intermech also has some rom war era stuff, I believe he has a couple roms and a bison class..I forget what all it is but I think his usage policies are completely open including modifications so you guys could even throw his stuff in too. The workmanship many not match side by side, but they're pretty good none the less.

don't you DARE toss ships!  i've got every stinkin one of your submissions, including that Za'Chiri mantid!

besides, he gimmie a look at the nif for the connie.  it's a beaut, but it's also highly complicated, has a complicated unwrap, and (thanks to all the SFRD beta-ing) i now automatically look for funky smoothing errors (really minor ones on small detail stuff that pass just fine otherwise)

Yes please, release em all, none of your models deserve being trashed, there can never be too many models available anyway lol(plus I like when models match).  Also I'm sorry to hear about your complications, I'm glad your back though, haven't touched BC in the longest time, but still eagerly awaiting your TOS/Museum ships!

Also, mourn Romulan Cabbage :( Poor ship, Hope it can be remade
