and, if you haven't noticed, most other species simply don't name individual ships.  that's an earth tradition, and may be a thing for the Human species.  also, Gene Roddenberry himself was a Navy man, so he used familiar names (i think he was a butter-bar).  there are exceptions, but they're mostly in Novels.  and the ONLY thing that's cannon is Paramount's official productions.  this is not like the Lucasverse where everything HAS to be cannon.  otherwise, could y'uns get away with all these kitbashed ships?

I agree with newman...you're all thinking about it too hard.

That isn't true, Klingon and Romulan ships have individual names too.

not that I ever noticed outside of a Diane Duane novel.  certianly not "canon" (which is ONLY the TV shows and movies).

Donatra was in command of the Valdore. I believe she said....

Quote
This is Commander Donatra of the Romulan Warbird Valdore

Also, Klingon ship names.

And in Enterprise we saw Vulcan and Andorian ships with names.

Andorians seem to have a similar tradition to Humans as if I remember correctly the Kumari was named for the first ice cutter to circumnavigate Andoria.

Also Vulcans have named a couple of ships after famous Vulcans which my suggest a similar naming policy.

But Newman has a point. Ships called Enterprise give me a sense of history and pride and ship classes like Intrepid and Galaxy create a real sense of exploration and boldly going which to be honest wouldn't happen if the hero ships and classes had alien names.

Borg ships are also given Designations, which I guess you could sort of count as names.

*chuckle* mea culpa!

I've only seen bits and pieces of the four main series (OS included), and not a THING of the Animated version.  Every time i try to watch even reruns of Next G, somebody changes the channel complaining "how can you watch that old bleep?" and promptly puts it on reruns of NCIS or the various CSI's.

There's 5 main series.

And "Yay!" for NCIS.

yes, i've found plenty of names, now.  i've just never heard them refred to BY names.

some people don't count Enterprise as a series

somewhere out there, buried deep in science blue, is a Lutenant Commander named Shuto.

I prefer favorite authors and inspiring peace-bringers or ship-names that sound appropriate as Defiant variants and other front-line "F*** You, E.T. Go Home! Oh, and please have a nice day."[/b] type ships.
