This pretty much sums up how I feel about the movie.
This is a very good review and shows a bit like i feeling about the film too.
I have grow up with TNG and DS9 and I barely know TOS, but I'm a big fan of the TMP-era films and I went
to the film with an open mind, and after reading some critics on some official film-sites I were actually
quite exited about the film.
After saw it, I have a very mixed feeling about the film. I do not hate the film, tbh, I have indeed enjoyed the film in some way!
Like Limey said already, I think this is a very good sci-fi blockbuster but tbh, I would feel a lot better
when the film would be actually a real reboot and not connected in the way, we saw, to the old Star Trek.
I will not go into an debat of continuity and canon here, because I never became stunted about this that much. In
every show and in every film you will find continuity holes and logic errors, and I never judged a episode or an film
by that. Though something that buged me a bit was the engineering room. It really have absolutly no common to the
engineering rooms we saw in the series or in the previous films, the rest of the sets were on the whole ok.
The story were really nothing special and is in my opinion the weakest part of the film, it reminds me a lot of nemesis.
I really hate the scene on delta vega and those monsters on the ground of the planet. Wasted money for special effects
in my opinion. I would have rather seen some more battle in the Earth orbit. It seemed Earth have no defense systems.
(that also buged me already in some of the series, that sometimes it semmed to that Earth is defenseless)
Also like Newman pointed out already, they sometimes blow the special effects out of all proportions, sometimes less is more!
I'm not to fond of the new phaser and torpedo effects, it looks to much after Star Wars in my opinion, but this is also nothing
that ruined the film for me, so I can live with it.
Though there are some things I didn't was to fond of, there were also quite a lot things I liked on the film.
For example, I really liked the new warp effect, also I really liked the opening sequence with the destruction of the Kelvin.
One of the most remarkable scenes for me! Also I liked the kobayashi maru test and the scene, where they went to the Enterprise on the space station, and I really liked the shuttle hangar of the Enterprise.
Most of the characters actors did a fine job. Karl Urban as McCoy was one of the biggest highlights of the film for me.
He did an spot on job, DeForrest would be proud

Also I really liked Captain Pike and Spock and Kirk were well played too.
You can clearly see that the film was made for mass. You don't need your brain to watch this film, and this is no film
with depth and a message, but tbh, some of the old Trek movies already had not anymore the depth that some of the episodes have.
Though you can't say, that the producers of the film haven't concerned with the matter of Star Trek. The film isn't produced just for Trekkies, but I think they also tryed to respect them and the "old" Trek and you can clearly see that they put some
things and hints to the film that just a Star Trek fan can recognize.
At the end I have to say that even if I didn't can connect this film that much with the Star Trek I know and love, I quite enjoyed the film and I will also go into the cinema when they make another film!
At any case I'm convinced that this film will breathe some fresh air into Star Trek, and everyone here have to admit, that that film could have been a good deal worse
