I also tried out the before-mentioned warp nacelles that I sketched, but they looked absolutely HIDEOUS on the Mithra. So I promptly put the old ones back.

Would you be able to post an image of the Mithra with them anyway, just to we can see =)

I never bothered taking any pics. Built them, hated them, removed them. :/ sorry dude.

@ Jimmy: awwww! Thanks. :)

@ Technerd: thanks! :D

I'm wondering, anyone have any ideas on how this can be improved, and the aft section smoothed out? Thanks in advance!

@ Jimmy: awwww! Thanks. :)
are you kidding??  no need to thank me - in fact, thank you for making this :)
now all we need is a cool retextured bridge for this baby! :D

Easier? Yes. As gratifying, interesting and fun? Heck no. :D At the very least, I want to try to model a bridge... I think it would simply be fun. Well, the modelling, anyways. :P if it doesn't work out, then I can say that I tried. And, Jimmy, it's okay. Technically it's a part of the Mithra Project, anyways. ;) Oh yeah, and... *cookies back* :3

Oh yeah, and if anyone has any ideas as to how to smooth out that aft section, I'm all ears... or eyes... since I'm reading... :/ Hah... Maybe I'll just have to re-build that, too? :/

hmm, it occurs to me that you need to update your MSD lcars display to reflect the ship in its current state :-P

Fantastic work Aeries, shes a beauty. Much better than my feds hehe.

I would make one suggestion, if your open to it. She has great edges here and there, keeping a sleek look but still looking tough, but the smoothing is a bit heavy inboard on the dorsal saucer, close to the bridge....I think you should reduce the smoothing a bit so the edge comes out there, as I indicated in my pic. Try it and see what you think.

Here we go. Your wish is my command, Raven. ;] Actually, I think those mods to the smoothing worked nicely... of only I didn't mess up elsewhere... oh well.

Here's a few pics, so everyone can see what I've been up to today... You'll notice that a great deal of the smoothing issues have, at least in part, been cleared up... kinda. Though I'll admit, I'm not too great with the smoothing side of things. But here's me, trying my best. :)

Wonderful.

Here is what I learned about smoothing...the trick is to pick groups of polys to smooth at a time, and try to be patient. If you smooth and come up with errors, it means the smoothing group is trying to smooth polys that are either not aligned in a reasonable plane, meaning that if you looked at the poly from the side one or two of the vertices would stick out compared to the others, or that the angle of one group of polys compared to the other group inside the ones you selected to smooth is too sharp.

In the case of the out of line vertice, I try to bring them in line...I look at the group from the side (the poly disappears) and look for those dots sticking out, moving them slightly until the entire poly set disappears. You can usually see where vertices are out of line if you look at the mesh group with no smoothing in place.

In the case of the angle that is too sharp, I will either reduce the angle of the sharpness (by lowering one set of polys so the angle is much less steep compared to the other set) or I will just choose, or break up the set that is closer matched and smooth them seperately, like you did above.

Finally, you can reduce the smoothing effect, one point at a time, until the edge you are trying to bring out pops into view. That will works sometimes as well.

This usually solves overall smoothing issues. Sometimes it also helps to increase the polys in an area to make it smooth better but cutting them in.

top tip from the top..  thats exactly how i do it.

its looking really nice now, whats the count on the polys?

thanks, Nighthawk!

Another update. Worked on some of the smoothing issues around the bottom of the ship, particularly around the deflector area. Also added four phaser arrays. They're hard to miss.

Hmmm...I still think the "prongs" from the secondary hull should be pulled closer together or something.  Also, I'd suggest pulling the pulse weapons in until they're almost flush with the hull.  Just a thought.  Looks good though!

QFT :P! The prongs sort of break the nice curve of the secondary hull.

looking good from the underside.  there are some unwelded vertices on the nacelle pylons... the areas where the corners go dark as a result of smoothing.

Even welded, those areas just refuse to smooth out... girr. How darned frustrating...

I have some bad news for you all, too. The Mithra's darn near pushing 30k, and I didn't even notice until just now. Seems the phasers add a cr*p load of polies. :[ *sigh*
