D'oh, now I see...odd that this is supposed to be a post-Nemesis refit, yet most of the changes are to the secondary hull while most of the damage incurred during the battle against the Scimitar was to the primary hull. :lostit:

yes MOST of the damage... but she was still damaged all over.... so why not upgrade while in dock?
now we're getting a little off topic so... lets wait for DJ.

The Sovereign is one of the most under-done ships in BC (not counting the 50+ blue-impulse engine/orange bussard CG-Sov retextures of course).  Glad to see a new take in progress, keep up the good work DJ.  :yay:

Yeah, I agree, it is underdone.  In fact, I think that P81 and CG's are the only ones.  CG's is from 2003, if you can believe that.  Really, this is not surprising though, the ship is hard to model.  There are so many nooks, crannies, and everything else.  It's a good challenge.  So far I've spline caged the whole thing save for the deflector dish itself.

Hey guys, as I build this, feel free to nitpick.  Because of the different depths of things, etc. it can be hard to get things perfect.  If something seems off, let me know.  So far with the saucer I've modeled the mesh exactly where the ships actual beams would be, so I can extrude them later along the bottom of the saucer.

Looks fine to me!

CG promised us a version 2.0, but RL keeps killing it. :(

She's looking good so far.  When you get to the texture phase, do you plan to use the Nemesis Sovereign aztec pattern and then just paint it white/grey instead of the darker color?  That would look pretty good IMO.

Not sure, tbh.  Haven't thought that far ahead.  Right now I'm just having fun modeling.  Don't ruin it for me by reminding me about textures.  lol  :nono: :funny

Small update before bed.  Added one more outer layer to the saucer.  I'll cut the window inlets into the hull tomorrow.

Looking good so far DJ.

But I have to say that the Sov is hands down my favorite design. If you can get this one right... oh man. I absolutely love CG's Sovvy and how good it still is after all these years, but a new more "accurate" one would be awesome.

Honestly though, as much as you are going to use some creative license on hybridizing it, I wish that you would make one that is as exact as possible to the most "desired" design of Sovereign - be it the FC or Nemesis versions. And then a second one that you went to town with whatever you wanted to do to it.

Anyhow... I look more forward to progress on this ship than any of your other creations.

I can see the FC model influence taking shape in what you got so far, around the secondary and dish.

A mix of the Model and CGI should look nice, Though I still love the FC models overall look and texturing compared to the CGI model.
 Just my opinion anyway. :)

"Eleanor" is looking fine.

It's funny that as I work on this ship, I'm getting the same sort of feeling as when I worked on the Ambassador.  It's a design I've been mostly ambivalent towards, but as I study it and build it, I'm growing increasingly fond of it.  I can tell that when John Eaves designed it, he probably really wanted it to stand out and be unique but still recognizable as an Enterprises.

Don't worry about the textures, for my Achilles/Proteus hybrid, the aztec paneling is actually traced from the Nemesis Ent-E renders from a small section and just duplicated around.

The Enterprise-E is a very difficult ship to build, and can easily be screwed up. Whenever I get to start building mine, I hope it will look as good as yours. Yours is looking good so far.

the ventral side of the stardrive section is going to be the biggest pain to do since it has alot of stuff down there like the fore and aft phonton tubes core ejection hatch, tractor beam unit and other stuff wehich i cant remember atm

I had the same feeling with the JJprise.

Excellent work as usual.

I think the most challenging part of it actually will be integrating the saucer and drive section in a believable way.  I think that tonight when I get home from work I will start on the impulse engines.  Getting those fleshed out as well as the shuttlebay should give some good points of reference to put the pieces together.

In terms of difficulty, what's really tough isn't so much the modeling, but rather making it look like it should.  All I can say is that spline caging is an invaluable tool for anyone who is building canon stuff.

I think he's referring to literally joining the saucer to the stardrive in the modelling process. As far as I'm aware, its not a connection like the Ent-A saucer and neck, it all appears to be made in one piece, much like the Ent-D saucer and neck.

The saucer of the Sov is designed to separate, as John Eaves has indicated.  Though to be frank, the parts when separated don't look very good and I don't plan to implement it.
