Need some help catching up
« on: September 30, 2025, 01:31:34 PM »
Hi all, it's been a long road time!
I keep feeling the urge to get into bridge commander again after many years but things seem to have moved a long way since I was last in the loop and I am totally lost!

I’m hoping you guys might be able to answer some questions and help me get back up to speed… Plus help me decide between trying to resurrect my old custom install or start fresh with this newfangled ‘Remastered’ mod….

GOG

I see Bridge Commander is now available from GOG, is this a legit disc-less version now? If so, is GOG the only place to get it?

My old custom install was built on the original CDrom version. I had the whole directory copied so that I could just copy the whole thing back over a fresh install from the disc. I’m assuming this wouldn’t work with a disc-less version?

Would I be able to just use the disc-less .exe file in my custom install or would it be more complicated to use my custom with it?

Remastered

Is ‘Remastered’ considered to be the best place to start with a new BC now?

In my build, I liked having specific ship ID’s for a Class (I think it was the skinning tool?). Does Remastered have this or will, for example, every instance of a Sov be the USS Sovereign or Ent-E?

Do the Dauntless and Sovereign have the correct registries in the single player?

Does Remastered require specific mod versions?

Where best to download mods now

I’ve found multiple different mod sites for bridge commander, whereas it used to just be BC Files (it going down was one of the reasons I fell out of BC years ago). Where’s the best place to go now?

If you're old timer user then consider Remastered like having a bare bones install without any extra things. If I were you I'd use the custom install or start with KM based install.

It's legit of course though technically I believe GOG applied the no-cd patch which is kinda hilarious in its own way. Other than that the games are the same just stock game + 1.1 patch + nocd patch inbuilt.

Think I covered that above.

Gamefront: https://www.gamefront.com/games/bridge-commander

It's the old BCFiles actually restored.

Oh, we're all on BC discord now, forums are more or less an archive now: https://discord.com/invite/AhN8a3KeP9

BC Modding is not dead though, what we're working on if you are interested: https://bc-central.net/bcmm/

For example Omarion nebula battle 170 ships, don't think you've ever seen that before in BC

Ok, so while I'm also trying to figure out how discord groups work...

If I've understood what I've read so far; Remastered would be a decent way to get my single player fix for now, but may not be the best thing to start a new custom build on because of some script alterations? And the BCMM is intended to be a better base to build on for BC going forward?

How do I go about combining my old disc based custom install with the GOG version of the game? It says I need GOG Galaxy to install it and I'm feeling old and confused...

Thanks for your help!
