Here is a qoute from Orci about the trailer,

Orci also discussed the controversy regarding the construction of the Enterprise on the Earth instead of in space as expected. "Firstly, there is the notion that there is precedent in the novels, etc. that components of the ship can be built on Earth and assembled here or there. And the second thing is that the Enterprise is not some flimsy yacht that has to be delicately treated and assembled." He went on to explain the logical reasons for it being built on Earth, saying that the idea for this "...comes from our creative license."

EDIT: here is the full interview with him, he actually starts getting technical about the enterprise..

no BSG ripoff for me, thankyouverymuch -.-

Where has it been confirmed that it's a BSG ripoff?

That's pretty much the classic Connie 40 years worth of SFX later. The original drawings of the Connie from the 60's had Aztecing, but it couldn't be done within their budget. It was finally applied in TMP. As far as the nacelles, that's pretty close to what I'd imagine the Bussards look like powered down.

Abrams said that the Enterprise is pretty much exactly the same on the outside, but visually expanded on. It's basically what the Connie should have looked like back in 1966. They even hired the old fellas from the Original Series who are left to help work on the design. It's even recieved praise from the Okudas.

As far as being a reboot like BSG, that's not the case. It's still set within the current Trek Universe. All it gets is a visual reboot, which personally can be lived with.

EDIT: Oh yeah, this is totally a bastardization of the original design.

Aside from the SFX improvements, I can't tell a single design change.

apart from the fact we have a very narrow view in the trailer... the team has already confirmed they intend to have their own take on things, and it has been confirmed that the ship design is significantly changed on both the inside and out.

The official release of the trailer should be today at www.paramount.com/startrek  nothing so far but when it does come we will be able to see more detail.

  • Doctor who? ;)
Well at least with the high def version you can see
Code: [Select]
the engineering hull, warp pylons, warp engines and bussard collectors more clearly. Their bussards in this movie remind me of the old version lawnmowers  :P
Simon Pegg is awesome but as Scotty, I don't think its gonna work.  :P He can't do 'serious' acting as per evidence to a character he played once in the revived Doctor Who. It was a serious role but it just felt more comedic. Simon should have stuck to comedy. The role in the new movie should have been given Paul McGillion. At least he can play a convincing 'scotsman'. Something that him and Jimmy Doohan (god rest his soul) could only do in my opinion.
