that big storm that swept sideways over the entirety of the US has left us in some interesting situations, here.  we got the snow at the start, being right on the edge of the temperature line.  then yesterday, we get thunderstorms, complete with pea sized hail, then it all freezes hard overnight.  morning chores had to be done very carefully lest I fall on my ass.  glad I'm not driving much THIS winter.

Limey:  cheap tyres can be a plague around here.  but good tyres run 100 bucks apiece, so people often only buy one or two to save money...then end up putting them on the opposite axle of where they're needed.

$100 each? ? Where the hell are you buying tires?  I cost me $177 each.

I'm not buying sports width/low profile/summer tread/studded snow. antique wheel size/name brand tyres.  no 325/50r20 Pirelli's on MY vehicles, mister.  stock steel wheels, if possible, here (so they don't stick to the rotors or drums).

CHEAP tyres ran me for my first car.  they were only 35 bucks apiece, plus mounting.

one good thing is that it hasnt snowed much yet where i am...  a coating of snow the other day, then heavy rain - i hope that trend continues... then again, it is an El Nino year...  last winter was terrible, one storm after another after another...  completely sucked...

lol at you yanks with your annoying temperature scale and weird units. Do you have any idea how much more difficult they make it to answer engineering questions for people on Yahoo! Answers?

It's currently about 2'C here (that's 35.6'F for the SI-impaired), with a very heavy frost. A couple of weeks ago, the lake that our house overlooks froze solid. Still not a flake of snow yet though.

No snow here in Catterick, North Yorkshire as of yet other than the odd shower on the moors. But there's a bloody thick fog which means I really shouldn't drive home (about 300 miles) just yet!
Just to give you some idea of how thick it is.
There's a tree about 10 yards away from my bedroom window. And I can't see it due to this fog.
I miss :bigdance:

What's that got to do with it? The simple fact is , America is one of only 3 countries that hasn't adopted SI units, the scientific standard.

I've always been taught in kg, so stones mean nothing to me. This is a bit of a contentious issue between me and my gf, who learned to use stones through far too many women's magazines. The last bastion of Imperial Annoyance for me in GB is my car's MPG display, because they price petrol by the litre, and using miles as the unit of distance between cities.

But anyway. Winter. Grrrr. I've recently had to start wearing extra layers to bed at night, because by the time I get to bed the heating has been off for about 6 hours. Admittedly this is about 5 hours after normal people go to bed, but I seem to get more done at night.

well, it seems that winter arrived at 8 in the morning in form of snow fall, and steep dive of temp.. how steep, you ask? well, from 22F in the morning to 5F at the moment, and tomorrow morning we should expect -2.2F..  :eek

Meant to snow where I am (north and west a bit of London) on Thursday. What fun! :P

I'm in Silicon Valley and even we've had some pretty cold weather... for Northern California that is.

It went down to 33 F this morning and Mount Hamilton (where Lick Observatory is) which is about 20 miles from my house had snow on it down to 1000 feet. It's a 4,300 foot mountain.
