The colder it is, the easier I breathe. I hate warm weather, it's agony for me...goes that way when you're born in February  :funny So, bring on the cold, snow and the beautiful half-darkness of a winter night  :evil :arms:

It's like I could've written that post. :P

I have found -8C and such degrees to be quite tolerable, especially when the wind is not blowing. More comfortable than 1 or 2C  in fact.

I suspect it has something to do with the humidity freezing and falling to the ground. (which btw is the reason antarctica is actually one of the dryest places on Earth. <--- Useful fact) which in turn makes the air less "thick" and heat conductive? (thus insulating your own body heat better).

On the other hand, hot & humid days just make you want take your skin off.

Blizzard Warning for Southeast Providence, RI
from 4 pm EST, Sat., Dec. 19, 2009 until 12 pm EST, Sun., Dec. 20, 2009

Issued by The National Weather Service
Boston, MA
4:41 am EST, Sat., Dec. 19, 2009

A Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 4PM this afternoon to 1PM EST Sunday.

A classic wintertime nor'easter will continue to develop off the mid-Atlantic coast today.  It will move northeast tonight and likely be situated just southeast of Nantucket early Sunday morning.  Snow will spread northward in advance of this low pressure system and will reach the warning area by this evening.  The snow will become heavy at times overnight and continue into Sunday morning.  The storm will pull away during the day on Sunday, which will allow the snow to taper off and end Sunday afternoon.

Storm total snowfall amounts are expected to be 10 to 15 inches, with locally high amounts possible.  In addition, as the storm approaches tonight, north to northeast winds winds will increase significantly and become quite strong.  Sustained speeds of 25 to 35 MPH are expected tonight and Sunday with gusts possibly reaching 60 MPH, especially across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  This combined with heavy snow will cause blinding snow at times with visibilities reduced to under a quarter mile at times.  Significant blowing and drifting of the snow is also possible.  Travel is not recommended tonight and Sunday as it will become difficult.

A Blizzard Warning is issues when sustained winds or frequent gusts over 35 MPH are expected with considerable falling and/or blowing and drifting snow.  Visibilities will become poor with whiteout conditions at times.  Those venturing outdoors may become lost or disoriented, so the persons in the warning area are advised to stay indoors.

interesting - we could get thundersnow - those are pretty cool...
our latest update:

Issued by The National Weather Service
Boston, MA
10:11 pm EST, Sat., Dec. 19, 2009

A Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 1PM Sunday, for central and southern Rhode Island, southeast Massachusetts including Cape Cod and the Islands.

Snow has already overspread the south coast through 930PM and has quickly become heavy, already receiving snowfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour in some locations.  The activity will overspread the rest of the region through 11PM and become heavy by midnight.

Blizzard conditions are expected in these areas for a time overnight and early Sunday with heavy snow and frequent wind gusts of 40 to 50 MPH producing whiteout conditions.  Damaging wind gusts to 60MPH are possible on Cape Cod and the islands.

The worst of the snow and wind will likely occur between midnight and 8AM.  Snowfall rates up to 2 inches per hour are possible in the heavier bands.  In addition, isolated reports of thunder are likely to occur overnight.  Isolated snowfall rates could locally exceed 3 inches per hour in any thunderstorm.

Storm total snowfall amounts of 12 to 16 inches are forecast across all of Rhode Island, southeast Massachusetts, and the upper Cape.  Isolated amounts of 18+ inches are possible.  Near 10 inches of snow is forecast for Marthas Vineyard, Nantucket Island, and the outer cape where a mixture of rain and snow at the beginning of the storm will reduce snow totals.  Blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibilities to near zero at times and scattered power outages are possible.

The heaviest snow will pull away Sunday morning but steady snow will likely persist into early afternoon before ending later Sunday afternoon.

Travel will become dangerous and is not recommended overnight and Sunday morning.

A Blizzard Warning is issued when sustained winds or frequent gusts over 35MPH are expected along with considerable falling and/or blowing and drifting snow reducing visibilities to below one quarter mile for at least3 consecutive hours.  Whiteout conditions are expected.  Those venturing outdoors may become lost or disoriented, so persons in the warning area are advised to stay indoors.  Also, be sure to check all external vents on your house because they can lead to a carbon monoxide risk if blocked by snow drifts.
