And we've started dropping snow from rooftops.. Not for those who have a fear of heights like I do.. but it's not so bad during winter, because everything is white so estimating the distance down is difficult.. :P

Well, at the moment here in southeastern Kentucky it is pouring snow. We have been promised 4 to 6 inches. What is so bad here are all the mountain roads get near impassable, they only keep main roadways clear. Glad I live near the main road.

Have a very steep driveway, can slide down if i have to, but can't get back up so I have to park near the roadway. good for exercise I guess,,  :D

at least you didn't have to WALK home, today (about 6 miles!).  fuel lines froze up again, and now everybody thinks the fuel pump is fatz (been hanging around my drive clients too long).  it may have been cold, but it was lovely out in that.  i even saw Turkey.

i get out of the heavy snow for tomorrow, thanks to my wonky fuel system (but probably not the repairs)

Quote
Another East Coast Storm Looms!
by Jonathan Erdman, Sr. Meteorologist

Storm Ahead:  What We Know Now

After finishing with the South, low pressure will likely intensify in the East late Tuesday, then track up the Eastern Seaboard Wednesday and Thursday.

The exact track of the intensifying low will determine the impacts (how much snow, if rain mixes in, etc.).  There are two track scenarios most likely at play:

Scenario #1:  Low tracks farther inland

- Cold air (i.e., subfreezing air) may give way, especially near the coast.

- Sleet, freezing rain (with potential ice accumulations), or rain may fall along/near the I-95 corridor for a period of time, reducing total snowfall amounts there.

- Heaviest snow totals: farther inland over the interior Northeast.

- High winds, downed trees/powerlines, power outages, would be a given, particularly if there is significant ice accumulation, due to the force of wind plus the weight of accumulated ice.

- Coastal flooding

- MAJOR travel disruption (airports, roads) over a wider area, given heavier snow totals inland, and potential ice accumulations.

Scenario #2:  Low tracks offshore, near the coast

- Cold air (i.e., subfreezing air) remains locked in place.

- Heaviest snow and blizzard conditions along I-95 corridor.  Lighter amounts in the interior Northeast.  Somewhat similar to Christmas Weekend blizzard.

- High winds lead to downed trees, power lines, power outages and coastal flooding.

- MAJOR travel disruption (airports, roads)!

If the offshore low track (scenario #2) pans out and the low is too far out to sea, then the I-95 corridor may only see a glancing blow of snow and wind.  The exception may be eastern New England.

What we know now:

*Peak storm impact in Northeast:  Wednesday  through early Thursday
*It is far too soon to precisely forecast snow/ice totals for any given city/location.
*However, this storm has the potential to dump at least 1 foot of snow over a large swath of the Northeast, with much higher totals exceeding 20" in spots.
*High winds, downed trees/powerlines, and power outages are possible Wednesday into Thursday, particularly near the coast.

that storm was crazy intense...  they really screwed up that forecast - 6 to 10 inches of snow my ass...  it was twice that!
New York City got 19 inches of snow; Boston, Hartford, Providence - all a foot of snow...  even as far south as Philadelphia got nailed...  what is up with this winter ffs???

January 28, 1986 - cold temperatures at the Kennedy Space Center caused a sluggish response of an O-ring, leading to the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger...

i remember exactly where i was that day...  i was 9 yrs old and in the 4th grade, and i was home with the flu watching TV on the couch that day...
during the middle of The Price Is Right (between 11am and noon) is when the news came on and stayed on for the rest of the day...

inches of snow and just a few degrees of minus and its the end of the world?
Let me know when you start measuring snow in feet and get -35'f / -40'f...
Coldest I ever remember it getting around here was in 98-00, -62'f.

depends on where your at.  i know where I'm at, anything below 15 F gets people worried (the average for January where I'm at is right at freezing)  the temperatures your describing are Alaskan (or Minnesota in a WARM winter :P).  for where Jimmy's at, yes, that's rather unusual, being costal, he's in a warmer climate zone than I am.
