Well all of Australia has been utterly devestated by floods, and you're all complaining about a few inches of snow?

Let me put this in perspective: I have six-foot snow piles all around my house, and indeed there are similarly large piles around a great many houses all over New England. We've been trying to dump it into the backyard, and still it piles up. Snowblowers can't do jack, and neither can the plows. Plus, I live on a narrow street, which makes the snow pile buildup even worse, as it could impede traffic down my street - both because it crowds the street, and because people have to walk into the street to get by, as the sidewalks are all buried. The weight of all the collecting snow is collapsing roofs in various cities and towns all over my state - and that's just MY state. Lord knows what's happening everywhere else.

It is not my intention to downplay what has gone on in Australia, which - if what I heard from Queensland last month was any indication - is pretty nasty stuff. But with respect to that, you're not the only one who has to worry about what Mother Nature is going to throw at their country next, friend.

but yeah its fun to follow americans gasping at the sort of weather that would be considered kinda warm-ish / very mild at best in finland.

 :yeahthat:

Joshmaul: remember, this is a pair of Scandinavians talking.  those temps and accumulations are NOTHING to guys that close to the Arctic Circle, and New Englanders should be relativly USED to that by now (i hear Maine gets it bad in the winter).  for us, it's the temps that are the pain, and I'm at 40 degrees north.

what Joshmaul is referring to is the way that they pile the scrapeoff in gigantic mounds that narrow everything to one lane just wide enough to get a car through, if that.  we're not used to being "shoved in a hole" with no visibility like it was a WW1 trench.  you guys really ought to come over here and teach snow removal crews how YOU do it.

and before you ask, no.  no chains, and some states make studded tires illegal (Maryland, for example).  regs and how stuff's done changes with every community, let alone each state.

in Rhode Island, an elementary school had a roof collapse, tho no one was in the building and was only over one classroom i think; but there have been alot of roof collapses from all the weight of the snow and it not melting between storms...
literally every week since xmas has had a major storm here in the northeast US, and about a foot of snow with each one except maybe one or two...  Providence has had like 3 feet of snow in the last 5 weeks, but other cities has had more...  New York City has had 4 and a half feet...  many cities have set all-time record highs for snowfall totals for january...
it has been a rough winter in this area, and many major cities with millions of people in this area have been hit hard...

and another storm due in on saturday! lol

speaking of Australia - they just had a major cyclone (hurricane to us folk lol) slam into them; no fatalities but major widespread damage and flooding...  they were just barely recovering from the latest major floods and other devastation...

in the US, the last storm from just a few days ago affected like 2/3s of the entire US...

For the desert, this is WAY below average, even for this time of year.  At noon it was 36 degrees.  I actually had to warm up my car this morning, I've never done that before!

Just a few pics from my neighborhood. This is before tomorrow's storm, heh. The damn plows also smacked into the back of our Explorer, cracking the hatchback - and they seem to have no problem with burying other people's cars.  :bitch:

that's what the towns look like around here.  and I'm not suprised at the plows, either.  how come the township/borough/city trucks are always driven by Bleeps?

This wasn't the city plow, they don't even come near our street anymore (they wouldn't fit, lol); the crack in the Explorer's hatchback was caused by the privately-owned plow guy who's employed by our landlady. It's a miracle it was just a crack, considering that it was right in the middle of the damn thing, lol. (Pic attached.)

February 6, 1978 - the "Great Blizzard of '78" struck the Northeast, with southern New England especially hard hit... Boston received 27.1 inches of snow by the time the storm ended...
