WTF are those modular units on the spine above the cargo bay & hangar bays for?

For different modules.  Duh. :P

No seriously, the idea is for swappable modules.  Pull into a starbase, switch out a sensor platform with 2 phaser banks and a torp launcher.  Quite useful during the dreaded X-Era (Cardassian War anybody?)  Or if you need to run a blockade, the extra engines will provide the needed boost.

I usually save smoothing groups for last, helps me see mesh errors better without them.

Update before I go to bed.  Torpedo side pods added, top platform leveled, and Excelsior-style ribbing area prepared.

I preferred the Miranda-esque dropped nacelles.
Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
 Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

They'll still be there.  I only put in a place holder for the nacelle pylons.  A Miranda-esque ship is actually what I'm trying to make.

Based on that sketch I think she's going to be pretty sexy.  When I see the front I picture a blue Excelsior style deflector.

Love the little cut you've made around the deflector, very post-nem imo.

I'm thinking of releasing it as a pack, with different ships with different pods.

On a side note, this design was based on something spawned of sillyness:
http://bc-central.net/forums/index.php/topic,5671.msg108536.html#msg108536
I might throw in a U.S.S. Halcyon as a tribute to that monstrosity. :roll

EDIT- Oh, now I'm actually going to bed.

I actualy like your orignal design better. I think the top hull should continue to the tip of the saucer instead of stopping aft of the bridge. Jest an idea.
