Star Trek Online - Design The Next Enterprise Contest
« on: November 17, 2010, 05:55:39 PM »
I just recieved an email from Cryptic studios, creators of Star Trek Online.  The Email suggests they are giving fans the opporturnity to actually design the next Enterprise.  Actual text below...

Quote
Design The Next Enterprise
Seriously. We're working with our friends at CBS and Intel to turn the design of the next canon Enterprise over to you, Star Trek's most dedicated fans. Just visit our special Design Hangar and submit your version of the universe's most iconic spaceship. We'll convert the best design into a ship in Star Trek Online, but that's not where it stops.

They then go on to list the prizes.  But really?  They're letting us design the Sovereign Class successor?  In my mind there is only one worthy successor to my favorite Starship Class and that's DJ's Century Class.  I think he should submit it to them and hopefully cement his awesome design in Star Trek History.  What does everyone else think?

Here are the prizes listed, in case anyone was curious...

Grand Prize: Custom, STO-painted Alienware M11x laptop; STO Collector's Edition; STO Lifetime Membership; and a 3-D model of the winning design.
Second Prize: Alienware laptop (no custom paint job), STO Collector's Edition and an STO Lifetime Membership.
Third Prize: STO Collector's Edition, STO Lifetime Membership and an Intel Core i7-875k processor.
Fourth Prize: STO Collector's Edition and an STO Lifetime Membership.
Twenty-one Honorable Mentions: Standard-edition copy of STO and a Star Trek Online poster.

this was already mentioned in the STO thread in the games section...

Canon is what people argue exists on ships that don't exist.

And technically it will only be game "Canon". If CBS uses it in other media it will become B-Canon unless they make a new TV series with it.

Canon , what people argue exists, that doesn't really  exist.

http://trekmovie.com/2010/11/18/cryptic-announces-design-the-next-enterprise-contest-for-star-trek-online/

Crypic Studios is hosting a contest to design the Enterprise-F for Star Trek Online. The game is perking up nicely since release (propping Atari sales, no less) and is getting better with every release. They are offering major prizes in a contest to design the new ship. You guys should have a nice advantage because you have not only already released many amazing projects, but you have also the talent to actually submit incredible 3D models while most of your competition is going to be sending in graphing paper.

Prizes include:

    * Grand Prize: Custom, STO-painted Alienware M11x laptop; STO Collector?s Edition; STO Lifetime Membership; and a 3-D model of the winning design.
    * Second Prize: Alienware laptop (no custom paint job), STO Collector?s Edition and an STO Lifetime Membership.
    * Third Prize: STO Collector?s Edition, STO Lifetime Membership and an Intel Core i7-875k processor.
    * Fourth Prize: STO Collector?s Edition and an STO Lifetime Membership.
    * Twenty-one Honorable Mentions: Standard-edition copy of STO and a Star Online poster.

Fourth prize is worth over 300 bucks, guys. I can imagine that the grand prize would be incredibly nifty, even if just to have a model of your work.

Making a 3D model doesn't necessarily mean a better entry. It is about cleanliness of the artwork and how the design lineage continues to the Enterprise-F(?). I believe this is a lot like the Pocket Books Titan contest. I better fire up Illustrator then. :)

I think it's worth leaving at least one topic here. Maybe even a sticky. Many of the modders don't necessarily hang out in the other games section and this is fairly relevant to the forum.

How is it "fairly relevant to the forum", BC Modding, when the intent is to design a model for a non-BC game?

Its only for the US, witch sucks. So that means DJ, Marky, Baz, ME and nearly every other modder from here is not able to enter. I'm not to sure where Wily is from, but if there are any people from the US here, from what i know, you don't have to be a 3D modeler. There Relicing a Tool on the 9th of December, i'm not sure what it is. SO i hope some of you from here tries it out.
