Hi all,
I'm new, so apologies if this is in any way a daft question.

I've only recently discovered Bridge Commander and have been enjoying it a lot as I progress through the missions. Initially I started at the middle level but my combat skills, or lack of them, compelled me to start again at the easiest level.

Okay, the problem is I have got as far as Episode 7, mission 4 where you go back to Alioth and attempt to destroy a Cardassian station and rescue Commander Data. You take a small fleet comprising a Klingon, Romulan, and another Star Fleet vessel to do the job, but as I arrive at Alioth 8 and meet a Cardassian patrol of 3 or 4 ships, just as battle is joined, the game crashes with the message that the exe has encountered a problem.

I have disabled one of my two cpu cores, tried compatibility mode, run the game in very basic graphics, and had each ship replenish at Starbase 12 before warping to Alioth - no change, it still crashes.

Would any of you nice people have any advice for me? I've enjoyed the game a lot and I'd hate to have to abandon it unfinished at this late stage.

I'm running XP by the way.

Thanks.

wait a minute...I think there's a "Game Breaking Bug" in the single play storyline?

i couldn't find a refrence.

look up "getting a console report" here.  this will help immensely in diagnosing the problem

Thanks for the reply.

I'm new to this so I may be talking rubbish but, the tips on making a console report didn't seem to work. But I'm not crashing to a blue screen. Its like a Windows requester saying stbc.exe has encountered a problem and do I wish to send an error report to Microsoft.

It seems like while BC has gone through the roof on the mod scene, the single player game is a bit forgotten.   :(

From what I've read, people say that crashes at least in modded versions usually arise because ships are trying to fire weapons they don't have, or torpedoes they don't have - that's why I tried getting all the ships to dock and hopefully replenish. If this is the likely cause, is there a way I can reset things?

Thanks.

If my memory serves me correctly your game save is crippled. I'd recommend trying to restart the mission from the -TestMode.

When you enter the game in TestMode a debug menu appears which allows you to play each mission.

Brilliant, that did it, I'm back in the game.

Many thanks.

Have a good weekend

..and prosper.  :)

Understood, the thing is I don't really do the multi-player thing, which seems to be the main interest (understandably enough) for the BC community.

Although, I might try convincing my friend to try connecting up for a battle between the two of us, just as a toe in the water step.

Is that easy to do? Not that it'll make any difference, but he only lives a stone's throw from me.

in my experience, it's not "multiplayer" either.  though sov has worked in coordinating bits in his BCUT program for multiplayer, everybody tends to download ships to their personal taste for use with quickbattle and ITS addons more than anything else.

since everyone does tend to download specific ships, I don't think multiplayer actually gets used much.

eh I've seen quite a few KM servers.
Canon is what people argue exists on ships that don't exist.

For most people I know it's not about multiplayer, it is about mods which bring something new and cool to the game.

For example mods like
NanoFX which enhance the visual effects in the game. Though a downside is that it makes the game a bit unstable (mainly ExplosionFX portion of it)

Mvam Infinite which brings MVAM technology to your game.

Bridge Plugin Core which is required to install all of these different newer bridge mods out there.

Galaxy Charts 2.0 which is one of the most popular mods for BC and it brings your galaxy alive.

DS9FX Xtended last and the latest mod released under my leadership which brings new visuals, new systems and missions to the Quickbattle.

Your require only one tool to install mods and this is the swiss army knife of modding tools called Bridge Commander Universal Tool. It creates plugins, installs mods... Just make sure to download it from bcs-tng.com as the latest versions are actually found over there, not on bcfiles or anywhere else.

I stand corrected. I'd read that using mods tended to cause problems with the single player game and assumed wrongly that everyone was therefore into multiplayer. I enjoy missions, but my heart is really in the sixties with the cold war feel of the original series, so I will see what I can find.

There's a handful of cool Kobayashi Maru-esque scenarious that come bundled with the Kobayashi Maru supermod. That may be up your alley  :)
Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
 Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
