Going into the movie theatre with the preconception that you will hate the movie, will undoubtedly lead to exactly that result.

Not me. I just wanted to see it to thrash down on this blasphemous movie.
Thankfully I was wrong. It's a damn good movie.

I can second that. I was excited until the end.

One thing that I did not like: the end battle with the narada could have been a little more focused on a nice phaser/torpedo exchange. But oh well, it went down with a BANG!

"And this... is... to go... even further beyond!"

22 votes in the poll up above, 18 of which considered the movie to be "Awesome". Myself included. I think when the dust finally settles, the concensus will be that there will be a crowd of "old school" Trek fans who dislike the movie for the sake of having something to dislike. Essentially the "purists" who see everything that is not 100% like TOS, as being blasmephous and evil. People who moan and whine to high heavens because the new Enterprise didnt look like the TOS Enterprise. Hell, I recall people whining because the new Enterprise's registry font was different from the TOS font, after the first trailer was released.

And then you will have the (vast majority), of both existing fans of Star Trek as well as the uninitiated who will have seen the movie, and left the theaters after a couple of hours of enjoyment. I've heard people who were not originally fans, that saw the movie that also enjoyed it. The movie did what it's main intention was, which was to bring in a new crowd of fans for a "New Generation of Star Trek", as well as trying very hard to keep the existing fans happy.

I do not consider the new movie as being the "perfection" of Star Trek. As with all movies and television shows, there are occasional errors or inconsistencies. Considering the new movie is the first Star Trek movie in 7 years, and the first Star Trek at all within the past 4 years, i'm just happy for the fact that Star Trek is becoming popular again. Nemesis debuted on opening weekend with a "meager" 18 million dollars domestically, whereas this movie earnt well over 70 million dollars domestically (and over 115 million dollars in total when including international sales). And thats just for opening weekend. I would be surprised if they would not make sequels or (one could hope), a new tv series after results like these.

QFT.

And newman,
I am captain_obvious for a good reason ;)

  • Hello, Jerry.
Stop sniping at each other, or the thread will have to close again.

I wasn't the one doing the sniping. I just gave my opinion on the movie. I would hope we're all mature enough (naive, I know :) ) to not have the same opinion of the movie without resorting to the child-like "you suck-no you suck" discussions. I'm perfectly happy to not like that movie and still get along with people who do - after all I wasn't the one who started making comments on people not liking it because they went to see it already decided not to like it. All I'm saying, some of us will not like it, some of us will, our reasons are our own, and attacking either group for it is totally immature and uncalled for.

I must urge Paramount to please return to the old formula and hand over the rains to people who have been involved in Star Trek production before and are REAL fans of the entire 40s years of Trek.

You mean the same people who ran Star Trek into the ground, and damn near killed it off? Brannon "kiss my a$$" Braga, and Rick Berman? Both Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are fans of Star Trek, and they were the two writers of the movie. While they werent involved in producing past incarnations of Star Trek, as fans they are definitely qualified.

I'll take JJ Trek any day, over anymore Berman/Braga Trek. The essence of Star Trek is still alive and well within Trek XI, eventhough the circumstances surrounding the characters may have changed somewhat. It's there, if youre willing to see it.

I wasn't refering to Berman and Braga as they did lose touch with a changing fan base. I was refering to the wonderful production team and writing staff that came together during Enterprise's final season.

I giggled at the MotO cap, newman, but then I've been having a giggle at everyone through this I have to admit (Would kill for an animated version of this thread post-release, would go great with some Looney-Tunes-esque stuff. :P)

Please, if you still haven't seen it, I beg you to try avoid this post, so I'll keep it as short as I can.

While I didn't see the tribble, I did see Spocks very Picard-like tug on his uniform, though I'm not sure if I read too far into that or not. I saw a few others but I said I'd keep it short. I agree with Billz at least on the point of the casting being done brilliant, and I can't believe just how convincing Urban was, I really felt like I was watching a young Kelley. Hell, I felt that way for everyone, but found myself as a Bones fan now (Or at least realised I was one  )

I'd definitely say the movie accomplished what it was trying with for me, as I reinstalled BC and grabbed Baz and WC's ships, and it's given me a load of inspiration to do trek modelling again.

I too was leaning forward in my seat the instant the action started, and could swear I felt the blow to the head Kirk took from that Rommie (ow!).  I've gotta say I love that they've tried to give it a more spacey feel with the camera angles, breaking trek tradition of space being pretty much just a flat path, not to mention it gave up a load of beauty shots of the new girl and the Kelvin (Which I find myself liking possibly more than the E herself, don't hit me!) And that brief warp sequence to dodge the weapons fire, only to drop out soon after and spin around? HO-LY DA-YUM!

...I'm kind of all over this place with this but... "You could hear me breathing?!" Eager to keep an eye out for all the tributes with my own eyes rather than what I've read (It's nice to actually see the little bits like them), But I'm so worried that I'll just be blown away again that I'll not notice anything!

Bring on the next part, JJ! You have an exploit Roddenberry had when he started this ride: Young Actors! Keep 'em caged, chained, whatever, just don't let these ones slip or you'll regret it! We really don't need a "Welshy" clone!

EDIT: I'm having trouble finding good reference of the bridge, and I've gone back a far way into this thread. Anyone able to help me out? :P

well, i will be seeing the movie today at 4pm in the IMAX theater...
i have to admit (again) everything that newman has been saying (as well as billz, mckinneyc, and undedavenger) is everything i had been expecting and figuring all this time, for many months now...  i was hoping i would be wrong, but i am hearing alot of points made that are exactly everything i have been saying so far...
im gonna go into with an open mind and really try to like it; im really going to try...  but based on everything i have heard (both good and bad) i dunno, i still feel very dubious about the movie...
ill find out in 3 1/2 hours tho, and one of my friends who is also gonna see it was never really a fan of Trek and knows very little about the entire realm, so ill be curious to see what he think of it after the movie as well...
3 1/2 hours, i better start having some beers now lol

I saw it again last night, just as good the second time.  And afterwards, an older gentlemen who said that he's seen ALL of Star Trek said that he loved it.  So who knows why some of us Trekkies love the movie to death and some hate it... :?

well, my bf (who is also a major trek fan) thought it was awesome and wants to see it again...
me, i dunno...  it was ok, i guess...  it had every element i thought it would have; it was a little cheesy here and there, it was a little over the top, a little too fast-paced, too many "close calls", very much Hollywoodized, and there were a number of things i kinda didnt like about it...
but the movie overall was ok...  i wasnt very disappointed, but i wasnt very impressed either...  if this is the road Star Trek is going to be going on from now on, i just don't think i'll be a big fan of this "new timeline" and all the drastic changes in it...
i'd give it a 6/10 personally...

another friend of mine was supposed to go with us, but couldnt make it at the last minute, i would have liked to hear his review since he knows absolutely nothing about anything-Trek...
the movie wasnt all bad, there were some things that irked me...  when did Romulans start tattooing their faces, anyway?  there were some really unTrek-like factors (i guess that was the writers intentions?), it didnt feel all that familiar to me...  and i would have never guessed Kirk was into Rage Against The Machine lol  but that's just the "sell-out" factor modern movies are laced with, to appeal to the generic audience they are targeting...  oh, and the product placements lol  also, i didnt really dig the whole Spock-Uhura thing; that and all the other things that are just so very unlike anything original Trek was...  and unless i misunderstood something, Kirk was a cadet and was promoted to first officer?  huh?  a cadet to first officer just like that?  and then given command, surpassing all the other higher ranking officers?  (did i misunderstand something?) there were a number of things i spotted that were just a little unrealistic...  (i wont list all of them lol  most of them have already been said anyway)
i dunno, im just not a fan of this whole new thing...  im sure ill see the sequel anyway, im just not particularly enthusiastic about this whole thing; thats just how i feel...
as far as the poll, i'd go with "It was ok.  I wasn't thrilled, but I wasn't disappointed either."  i feel completely in the middle...

According the Prequel comic the tattoos were suppose to represent their loss or something.
