Just going on from what I said earlier, the warp engine. We all know that JJ likes Star Wars, and the warp engine looks like a pod racer engine (as martyr said) so naybe JJ is being naughty and trying to slip in some Star Wars?

Besides, though JJ undoubtedly has some influence, it's more than likely nothing more than a "That looks cool" or "Can we try this and see what it might look like?".  Remember JJ is the director.  For the most part, he deals with the actors and I doubt he gets too nitty gritty with the design of the starships.

However.  There IS undoubtedly going to be some Star Wars influence.  Ryan Church, who is most noted for designing the redesigned 1701 did work on the Star Wars prequels.  Now, before you hold that against him, those movies suck-factor depended on the fact that Lucas can't write his way out of a paper bag, Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman can't act together one bit and make "romantic" scenes that make people want to barf, and the pacing for the movies was too fast at times and too slow at others.  Ryan Church had nothing to do with that.  I don't think.

"Too sci-fi"?  Ummm....what were you expecting, Kirk and Spock to be fighting orcs and dragons or something?  Star Trek's always been science fiction.

And GOD Nimoy is OLD! O.O  But man, he still has the voice, and that's the important thing. ^_^

And GOD Nimoy is OLD!

Indeed. I noticed this as well. His eyes are so...dark.

"As you are so fond of pointing out, I am half human."  :P

And wow, I didn't realize he was 77.  And yet, despite his age, he seems to have slipped back into that role so easily.  Thank goodness.

Well, an interview with Roberto Orci with Anthony Pascale has confirmed what I knew all along.  2 words folks:  Alternate timeline.  As soon as Nero attacked the Kelvin(confirmed to have been in the original timeline but never attacked by Romulans), the timeline shifted directions.  That's why things change.  More than likely, Nero's advanced 24th century Romulan ship destroys the Kelvin, which causes upgrades into the proposed design of the Contitution-class vessels.  And also likely, Starfleet decides to build the Enterprise completely on Earth and in Iowa to prevent it from becoming a target, which it might have been if it had been built at the San Francisco fleetyards.  But again, that's conjecture.  Either way, it's an alternate timeline, and we have our friends Data and Worf to thank for the original idea, eg. "Parallels".

it seems like they have taken a very 'trek' way of portraying things differently.

I like that explanation and I don't think it's stretching anything.
Canon is what people argue exists on ships that don't exist.

Probably better than having Picard wake up to discover it was all a dream.

Well I always assumed that Star Trek Enterprise was in a modified timeline due to the events of Star Trek First Contact, for example the rank pips are similar to the TNG era. So to me keeping that in mind may make me more open to this film.

i dunno, i just think to use an "alternate timeline" kinda thing is the easy way out of having to actually put real effort into something...  initially i thought to myself "ok maybe this could make some sense, even if it is lame" but now i just think it is even cheesier...  it works for an episode of a show here and there, but to base a whole movie around it and try to sell that?  i dunno...
call me grumpy, but i just think this whole thing is rather sellout-ish and too Hollywoodized and overdone, and now they are using the alternate-timeline-parallel-universe-not-reality-but-a-derivative-of-it-so-we-can-do-whatever-we-want-and-hide-behind-that card i find even more discouraging...
*sigh* ah well...

Jimmy a totally agree with where you're coming from.

If you think about it, it sounds like they are desperate to explain the changes they've made to the ship and sets so fans who have been very vocal about said changes will give the film a chance.

Lets face it if Trek fans don't go to see the film it will flop at the box office.

Sell-out-ish?  No.  This isn't the first time Trek has touched on this subject.  And quite frankly, I knew the instant time-travel was involved that it was going to create an alternate timeline.  That was a no brainer.  I've seen nothing cheesy about it either.  And even if there is "cheese"...so what?  Star Trek has always had that "cheese" factor.  It just depends on how much of it there is.

And luckily, since the "Prime" timeline will continue, new TNG films could still come to pass.  To quote Spock, "There are always possibilities."
