Title: The Loonatics present: Star Trek Invasion mod
Post by: WileyCoyote on May 09, 2012, 09:19:19 PM
I'm creating a modding group called The Loonatics, and the team is composed of myself, Farshot, Bones, Centurus, Phoenix, Toa_Kaita (promotional video), Meteorafallen and Alejandro Todisco. I've never created a group before, but I would like to work with skilled people who produce nice work. I'll be able to help people out with modeling/mapping/texturing.

If you want to help out with this project, send me a PM and I'll consider it.

The project: With help from Todisco, he was able to obtain the ACTUAL ingame ship meshes (from a designer of the original ST: Invasion game) for us to use AS REFERENCE in this project. The group will be making all of these ships from scratch with better detail.

Star Trek Invasion is a very popular game, and I thought bringing these ships into Bridge Commander would be fun. I am also planning on making periodic video tutorials to share with the community.

Be looking for updates in the next several weeks! Stay tuned!

PROJECT 1: BC-Community Valkyrie Fighters

Similar to how Paramount was promoting Star Trek: 2009, with many different artists coming up with their interpretations of the Enterprise, my idea is once we get the smaller fighters built and mapped, we can have many people here "paint up" their fighter to make theirs unique. The ships will then be released together, separately from the main mod.

IN PROGRESS
USS Sentinel-WileyCoyote
Akira Class-WileyCoyote DONE, needs slight HP scripting
Borg Tetragon DONE, needs HP

B'rel Bird of Prey- Phoenix

Hurq Fighter- Bones

Medical Freighter- FarShot
Spacedock- FarShot

I was wondering what the top secret modding project you recruited us for was.  Sounds fun.  Looks like I need to play ST: Invasion then. ;)

It'll definitely be nice to have some ships to go with the Valkyries. :D

Also, nice Looney Tunes reference with the group name.

To kickstart this project: The USS Sentinel mesh is done. It is based off of the Post-Nemesis version by John Eaves. Enjoy!  :D

I have not forgotten to add the phaser arrays.

Sentinel looks awesome.  Is she getting an updated texture scheme as well?  Eaves wrote that the Post-Nem E had an aztec reminiscent of past Enterprises.

Can we get sigs too? :D

So when are we going to start handing out assignments?  I'm guessing I'm a ship modeler.

Very nice Wiley. Love the Bussard collectors on that beast.

I remember playing that game but I could never get passed a certain level... or maybe never took enough time to really try to get passed it. It's been so long that I don't remember what level it was.

Loved the ships though, and I know that this project and the people you have in the team are top notch.

Look forward for what's to come  :yay:

She will get an updated color scheme, and coloring similar to the ingame Sentinel.

I'm still in the process of getting the ships. It might be next week. So far, there is a good variety between alien and Federation ships.

Wow, the Sentinel looks awesome!  Always liked that they made some changes so you could distinguish it from the big-E, and you've really given her a much sleeker version of those changes.

EDIT: I like the idea of the community members designing their own look for a Valkyrie.

just out of curiosity, and prolly a stupid question, but what are the differences between the Sentinel and a Sovereign Class?  is it just the extra impulse engines?

Darker hull coloring, extra impulse engines, and modified nacelles.

ST:I was console only so I couldn't play it but this will be on my must have list for sure. And as for the custom Valkyrie the texture file for it will be setup like a template or whats the plan there? I've already got an idea for mine.

\o/ OMG!!! IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!! I cannot wait to see the textures on this beauty. Outstanding work Wiley!

Apart from the cosmetic differences, the Sentinel was also equipped with an Inter-Spatial Warp Drive. Now what that means I have no idea, but whatever it was reacted the the frequencies of the Kam-Jathe and Hur'q somehow.

Nice!

What are those red thingys on the top deck near the bridge?

BTW, just a friendly reminder for you to release the fix for the backward text on the starfleet pennant for your Sovvies  :)

Looking slick.  I'm guessing the phaser strips are gonna be textures only on this one to conserve polies?

I plan on fixing that also.

No, they are not in the frame. I moved them off so I can texture the ship easier. The saucer is now on ONE texture (using symmetry).

Here's another work-in-progress, the new Akira Class. Ignore the mesh issue at the bridge, it is an issue caused by welded vertices from the symmetry modifier.

Excellent!

But the sharp areas of the catamarans (top parts especially) need to be more "rounded" off.

Seeing as this is an Invasion Mod, do you think you could do hull colour varients, like was done on the intimidator class, where you had the war varient, normal and prototype colourings? i feel this would be a unique touch to these excelent quality ships when theyre done.

I was never a fan of the 3-nacelled Sovereign.

As for color variants, that might be a possibility for the Valkyries.

I was just looking back over Doug Drexler's Akira Class blog post (http://drexfiles.wordpress.com/2009/06/12/alex-jaeger-week-the-akira-class/) last night and think how frakking beautiful a ship it is! You're knocking this one out of the park, as per usual!

Perhaps my memory fails me, but, apart from appearing in some of the fleet shots in the CG cutscenes, what significance did the Akira have in Invasion? I realise it's a fighter carrier ship itself, and that's friggin' awesome, but is there another reason for you to be making it in this thread?

The Akira was part of the larger response fleet, and was the first ship to get destroyed by Hurq Mothership.

Thanks for the link! That's going to really help me with the underside.

I remember that from the game...vaguely.  I was never very good at it...loved the designs, but without the cheat codes, I sucked. :P  And people tell Alex Jaeger that the Akira has too many torpedo launchers?  It needs that many to cover the fact that she has only three phaser arrays...

EDIT: Just put the game in for the first time in a while and took a look at the models.  Are you going to give the Nausicaan fighter a new design if you do it, or are you going to stick to the Dominion bugship flying backwards design?

I haven't received that model just yet. Most/all of the ships shown in ST: Invasion will be getting a High-Res update, in both textures and mesh construction.

Almost done with the Akira. I cleaned up a ton of verticies in the saucer (left over from using the lathe tool). The final mesh would be in 10-15k poly range.
Enjoy!

Within the next few days, I'll be ramping up my participation in this team.  I've been off modding for a month while I worry about getting some  RL back in order.  Right now I'm actually getting my portion of the house into a usable state - in other words, getting my desktop set up once again.  I've been working off of a laptop the last several months and it just doesn't cut it.

I'm planning to tackle the Federation medical freighter and spacedock, as seen in the first post.  Stay tuned.

A question for the team members:  Should we get some form of communication structure between us that doesn't rely on BCC's PM system?  I prefer IM's myself.  I really like talking with fellow modders regarding creative and personal matters - as a believer of tabula rasa, I think us as people defines our work as well.

I used cylindrical containers, which joined to vessel.

You make a good model, and i made the high resolution model for animation from that.

if so, please please please put together a Dominion-War/late ds9-era Nebula Class (which is different from the regular standard model)   :D
one consisting of all Galaxy Class parts (saucer, stardrive, deflector, nacelles, etc) - i have been dying for one of those in my BC install for years!  lol

I take it this Nebula Class is DIFFERENT than the studio model (differences in saucer, engineering hull, etc), and it is the CGI version made with STANDARD Galaxy Class parts? CGI references of this particular ship can be seen at Ex Astris Scientia website.

If so, I actually like that version compared to the studio model. I'll consider it.

yeah it is the CGI model with the standard galaxy class parts - exactly!  i sooo much more prefer that one over the studio model...
the CGI model looks much more like the Galaxy Class's "younger brother" and just looks much better, IMO; it has not yet been done for BC...

The Bonchune CGI variant shown here at the bottom of the page (http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/nebula.htm)

i have always wanted that model as my stock Nebula Class versus the one BC currently has (and every Nebula model done has always been based on the studio model)...  i would imagine it wouldnt be too tough to do since it iss all Galaxy Class parts, just reconfigured lol

Jimmies right, but i have to say, with an awesome galaxy it wouldn't take you more than 2 hours to model the extra part and texture it - i know this is a massive no, no asking for project's but if an admin can do it, then frack it - i'm game with seeing a nebula too :D *pls*  :angel

The Akira is fully mapped and packed onto 3 2048-px resolution textures. There are some minor areas left to map, but I usually do those when I get to textures.

Agreed. The windows do look just a bit too long. The Akira is a fairly big ship so I can imagine the windows being smaller for proper proportions.

... unless of course the current windows are to "spec".

These are the same style windows as on the Galaxy class saucer.  They seem to stretch across the height of an entire deck, and recall that most of the ships we've seen over the years weren't designed from the ground up with maintenance tubes in between the decks as the Sovereign class was.  I would guess then that the Akira class doesn't have any Jefferies Tubes between its decks either.

Personally, I think the textures so far look awesome!  The best I've seen on a BC Akira model to date.
Title: Re: The Loonatics present: Star Trek Invasion mod
Post by: WileyCoyote on June 07, 2012, 07:58:34 PM
The underside of the saucer is nearly done. I never liked the stretched windows on the engineering hull, so I fixed that problem. I also changed the size of the windows on the upper saucer.

Post by: moed on June 08, 2012, 01:21:13 AM
Looking excellent Wiley.

There is something about the deflector though that looks a bit cartoonish. It needs more, I don't know, maybe more facets and even a bit of specularity (maybe not - I'm just aiming for a feel here) to give it more of a "3d" look.

Obviously stick with what the deflector is supposed to look like according to canon but... well, what I suggested above.
Title: Re: The Loonatics present: Star Trek Invasion mod
Post by: FarShot on June 08, 2012, 01:35:59 AM
I don't have a problem with the deflector.  I expect it'll look better with the alpha glow and speculars in the engine.

So I mentioned a while back a sketch coming on the Med Freighter.  It's not finished, haven't touched it for a couple days.  I have good references, but I made this anyway to sort of conceptualize the geometry better.  Some items in the ST:I textures aren't reflected in the model because of its low poly count.  This sketch allowed me to refine the design more before modelling begins, which will be soon.

Anyways, here it is:

After thinking about it, that torpedo area can be easily fixed. At least it's not a major part of the ship.

I figured as much.  I mean, just a simple texture alteration should be enough, I'd think.

My personal theory is that there are only about three or four launchers in the pod, and they can rotate to face multiple ejection ports so that torpedoes come out more directed towards their targets.  Imagine behind those four tubes on the front/dorsal of the pod is only one launcher and it can arc through the four tubes.

Not a bad theory actually. Perhaps even (since the Akira is an "older" design), a system meant as a testbed for what would later be used on DS9 ? (rotating torpedo turrets etc).

I always thought of it as a interchangeable pod like the Nebula which is why it has a launcher in the main body of the ship

This makes a lot of sense actually.  Wasn't the Defiant Class supposed to be one of the first ships designed solely for combat the Federation has built in a long time?  Yet the amount of Torpedo launchers the Akira Class has makes her seem like she was a warship and her registry number implies she's older than the Defiant Class which would then mean the Akira was a Federation warship long before the Defiant Class was built.  Unless of course your theory is true and the Akira actually had some kind of sensor pod instead. Considering First Contact was the Akira's first appearance and the Dominion had already been encountered at that time, (which was the reason the Defiant was pulled out of storage to begin with), then the Akira could have simply been upgraded with a Torpedo platform to increase her combat rating.

Now I'd kind of like to see what kind of sensor pod the Akira Class might have been fitted with :)

The Akira is now ingame (fixed the torpedo area as well).  :D Enjoy.

I'm now taking a 1-month summer class, so there will be even less updates from me. But once I'm done, I'll resume.

I've always liked the Akira- it has a balanced design. Plus, re-imagining the FC Borg battle as I was building her was fun too. :D Constructing the catamarans were probably the hardest part of the design. I also had to invent a way of filling areas of blank hull with something, rather than just plain color.

As usual, I try to make the ship look as close as possible as represented in the movies/shows. Other then that, I knew the ship looked cool, and my interpretation was going to look awesome...it was just a matter of time. Now I'll be able to build ships that also have catamarans...

Just a question what is this ship scaled to?

IIRC the Akira Saucer should be as wide as the Sovs.

USS Discovery as I recall. It was the ship that was caught in the gravitational pull of a black hole, and you had to rescue its escape pods.

Outstanding job Wiley

One thing though, and I realize this may not be canon but, I think the phaser arrays look too "plain" - seems like they just have a greyish flat texture and that's it. It may be because the resolution of your screen shots are not close up enough to the ship to see any details but in case the arrays are actually plain, I feel a model of this high quality should have more detail on the them.

Just my opinion.

Wow... And I thought Cryptic designs in STO were bad. That being said, I find no faults in your modelling. Just not a fan of the design.

To me, it looks like it's 2 ships (1 of which lacking nacelles), with the other ship being crammed into the first ones back side. If it's supposed to be just 1 ship, then those nacelles look woefully undersized for a ship of it's total size.
Title: Re: The Loonatics present: Star Trek Invasion mod
Post by: FarShot on June 26, 2012, 12:04:22 AM
I'm actually planning to incorporate MVAM.  The front half is the medical ship and can land on planets to bring aid directly where it is needed.  The aft end contains the warp drive systems and remains in orbit.  If aid is needed at a secondary location, it can proceed there and do what it can.  It is also equipped with first class medical facilities, just to a smaller degree.

Title: Re: The Loonatics present: Star Trek Invasion mod
Post by: bdfd on June 26, 2012, 12:51:05 AM
hi farshot,

The concept of your vessel is original but remember this :
What is the utility of nacelles in Star Trek ?

The nacelles must create a warp bubble (warp field),
(http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj566/bdfd/Warp_Field.png)
so if you put them far behind, the front of your vessel will be not in the bubble.

Do you understand ?

you can see : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warp_drive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warp_drive)

I propose you to put the nacelles like in the USS Defiant, on each side of the vessel like this for example :
It's not a model but just a picture done with paintbrush  :)

As it's not my original design, and I'm only recreating it, I won't be making major changes.  If Wiley or Mr. Todisco say to scrap that part of the original design, so be it.  For now, I'm only worrying about the forward portion.
Title: Re: The Loonatics present: Star Trek Invasion mod

I don't see a problem with maybe making the design flow a little better, similar to Wiley's changes to the Sentinel.

I'm guessing it's about the size of an Intrepid.  I think that open bay on the ventral side is the shuttle bay and everything else is for medical cargo.  My guess is she has some Type 11 shuttles on board, and being that it is from Star Trek: Invasion, can service Valkyrie type fighters.

A bit more done.  I always envisioned the side pods as being full of the "hazardous" cargo, so if containment fails, they can always physically disconnect the pods from the rest of the ship.

Another thing to take notice of is the deflector dish.  It's based off of the Pasteur's.

Title: Re: The Loonatics present: Star Trek Invasion mod

Well, the ones that seem to jump out at me the most are the sharp points in the front part of the new ribbing section you recently made. Also, perhaps the outer edge's of the same ribbing in question.

Those are just a couple of examples that stand out. You use your creative judgement for other sections... but keep it subtle... a little here, a little there goes a long way.
